September turns out to be one unforgettable month...

After presenting my own collection during New York Fashion Week, on September 9th, six days later, in a company of my friend and agent, Depesha editor-in-chief Stephan Rabimov, I attended Daphne Guinness exhibition opening at the Museum at F.I.T.

Immediately upon our arrival I was photographed by the legendary Bill Cunningham; the photo appeared in the following September 18th issue of Sunday New Your Times in the article titled "Head Turners" and if there is the best spot to be in the Times, it is exactly where I ended up - right next to Valentino, De la Renta, and Daphne herself :

Seeing Daphne again was, obviously, a pleasure of cosmic proportions, but what was truly mind-blowing, it is looking at her breathtaking collection of unique pieces all in one place. A must-see exhibit featured timeless masterpieces by Gareth Pug, Chanel, Dior, Valentino, McQueen, and Guinness's own designs among other treasures.

Exciting news Guys and Girls!!

I just showed my SS 2012 dress collection titled " Triumvirate of Seduction" during New York Fashion Week on September 11th, 2011 at the amazing DUO - the sophisticated, beautifully decorated, recently opened restaurant / lounge owned by two gorgeous sisters.

Historically and politically 'Triumvirate' meant a group of three men holding power. Translating this concept into my world of couture, I singled out three powerful seduction elements that I design for, around, and always in mind with - Bust, Waist, and Hips - thus creating "Triumvirate of Seduction" as a perfect name for a collection purely consisting of alluring, feminine pieces.

My celebrity guests for the night were the divine Sasha Gradiva, who looked more breathtaking than ever, rapper Slick the Misfit, DJ Vinyla, actress Jessica Sherr and singer Xavier Le Pop Star.

Hand-picked, stunning models were slowly moving around the dimly lit rooms decorated with crystal chandeliers, soft leather banquettes and twenty foot murals depicting the sister duo owners, to the sound of a spine-tingling tango by Gotan Project...

The past two months were absolutely incredible for me - I've been swimming in the ocean of inspiration, enjoying every second of it:

I have been styling and designing for the electrifying SASHA GRADIVA (formerly known as Sasha), to whom I was introduced by a dear friend of mine, Stephan Rabimov, the editor-in-chief of Depesha magazine.

Sasha Gradiva is one of the most influential and respected European female artists of contemporary pop music with successful solo albums, MTV hit documentary and sold-out arenas.

Being the best European export, Sasha Gradiva is a perfect addition to the multitude of Gods on the American music Olympus, creating waves on both U.S. coasts with her innovative, futuristic, electro-flavored sound, and ultra-energized choreography.

For starters, I have created a translucent shutter screen ensemble to compliment her new bionic look:

What a surreal, marvelous, magical and truly unforgettable Tuesday that was! I was introduced to the incredible Daphne Guinness by Stephan Rabimov, the editor of DEPESHA magazine, who interviewed her. I presented Daphne with a demi-couture piece I have made exclusively for her commissioned by DEPESHA as a parting gift. This was a magical moment of meeting a True Legend. I will never forget that.

Glad to announce that my illustration of Daphne Guinness dressed in Alecia Zameska masterpiece from Zameska's FALL 2011 collection was just published in the Plain Dealer to illustrate an article by the legendary Marylou Luther.

"The Guinness-inspired dress here is a blend of suiting and corsetry with insets of ruffled chiffon. Other fabrics in this remarkable creation include silk organza, silk duchess satin and a wool/cotton blend"

Zameska's latest breathtaking collection is entirely inspired by Daphne Guinness. Very soon I will upload all of the images from the look book that I have fully illustrated for her, so make sure to check back.

LUDMILA GURCHENKO 1935 - 2011

Guys,

Today - March 30, 2011 marks a dark day for Russia and for me personally.

Ludmila Gurchenko – Soviet’s last movie Legend, Mega Star, a National Treasure - Russia’s Fire Bird and my own endless Source of Inspiration has died today from a heart failure in her home in Moscow. I am utterly flabbergasted and find it rather challenging to type with tears running down my face like two wild rivers.

Starring in a leading role in “Carnival Night” – first Soviet musical that was released onto silver screens more than 50 years ago had catapulted her into an ethereal stardom, making her an overnight sensation. Surviving the Nazi invasion, refusing to spy for KGB, making it through Perestroika, 15 years of oblivion and all the ~~nasty tabloid shit~~ negative press, she nevertheless managed to appear in more than 100 movies, each time rising anew like Phoenix from the ashes, creating roles that inspired generations, making even her tiny cameos an unforgettable pleasure for viewers.

At 75 - being a true Paragon of Elegant Eccentricity, Energy and Talent, Ludmila Gurchenko was still acting in three (!) different plays, recording music, promoting young talent, making movies – releasing her latest film in 2010 that she herself directed, produced and starred in.

Over the years throughout her amazing career this unique woman has been giving joy to millions of people, but she has made me the happiest and most privileged of them all by wearing the dresses I made for her. I wrote about that here.

There never was and never will be another Ludmila Gurchenko. This is an end of an era and it’s tearing me apart from inside to realize that she’s gone.

Good bye my dear Muse, good bye my beautiful, talented, eternally young Goddess. Thank you so much for everything. Rest in peace now.

Guys,

Been busy lately and loving every second of it :)

Made an illustration to promote a newly opened bakery in Brazil.
Was asked to illustrate a second (!) look book for American couture designer Alecia Zameska. Can't upload any of these just yet, till their official release, but will share them soon.
Also, a rich friend of mine - an avid Christian Dior lover, asked me to illustrate few of her favorite pieces from Dior fall 2010 couture collection. I'm almost done with that and will post them up shortly.

As for interesting events - I attended the opening reception @ Gallery 547 for Art for Art's Sake presented by CAUSA ARTIUM. You know, I've been really inspired from reading a lot about Genghis Khan lately, so I went there having styled myself as Genghis. Everybody loved it. The amazing Andrey Bartenev was there as well - so that, plus great Art and incredible vibe made it an unforgettable night :

ALEXANDER McQUEEN & ISABELLA BLOW UNVEILED IN CHELSEA GALLERY

This past Saturday, February 12, 2011 was pure magic:

I became part of history in the making when I went to the opening of Anton S. Kandinsky's "Obsession" exhibit - a memoriam and celebration of Alexander McQueen & Isabella Blow at CATM Chelsea, NYC sponsored in part by Depesha Magazine. (Same wonderful Depesha magazine for which I illustrated “Madonna: Long Live the Queen” back in 2008.)

I’m unsure what was more thrilling about that evening: seeing Anton S. Kandinsky’s mind-blowing oil masterworks live or actually meeting the artist in person and being mind-blown again by his charming personality.

My personal favorites from the exhibit are:

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

“I Don’t Want To Be the Founder of Yuan Dynasty. I Want To Be the Founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg”

“I Don’t Want To Be Leon Trotsky. I Want To Be Frida Kahlo”

and without a doubt - the crowning piece, the jewel of the exhibit, Kandinsky's latest staggering masterpiece: “I don’t Want To Be Isabella Blow, I Want To Be Alexander McQueen’s Obsession” (not pictured here) on public display for the first time. Visit the CATM gallery in Chelsea to see it.

Madonna’s camp has just announced that Kelly Osbourne is replacing Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen as the face of Madonna’s Material Girl line designed by Madonna and her daughter Lourdes Ciccone Leon. Do I think it’s a good choice? Absolutely. It’s a great choice. Kelly Osbourne is a shining example of how a drug addicted, unhealthy, unhappy, overweight, Goth looking frump can take herself in hand and transform into a size 6 beautiful Material Girl’s spokesperson. Kelly’s personal success makes her a perfect role model for teenage girls around the globe.

While we all are anxiously waiting to see the images of the new campaign, I’ve been flirting around with the concept of how Miss Osbourne might look in Material Girl clothes and I did these 3 illustrations below:

AMANDA LEPORE, MADONNA, & TAJ MAHAL

Hey Guys!

Ever since my “Leon’s Escapades” started taking off, I have been bombarded with requests to upload more of my early work. I realize people want to see it so I will be sporadically uploading my older material for your viewing pleasure along with my brand new stuff. These early drawings will be stored under the “Timeline” tag.

The illustrations below are from my 2002 India-inspired ‘Taj’ collection . Every single clothing piece you see is my original design.
2002 was the year I was blown away after discovering Amanda Lepore in all her plastic glory - therefore it’s no wonder that the collection’s aesthetic is heavily inspired by her. You can clearly see it in the poses and in body proportions. Obviously this has a strong Madonna influence as well, but that goes without saying. :)

Fun fact about this set: Out of everything I’ve ever done, it was this particular collection that won me the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) scholarship award at the time. Go fig…

I am currently composing a new illustration story that will consist solely of unique, avant-garde, jaw-dropping pieces from SS 2011 collections – definitely check back soon.

In the meantime, would you like to guess who will be the heroine of that new illustration story of mine?

Hint: She’s funky, hot, and extremely talented: Her debut studio album gained a Platinum certification in the United States only one month after its release in 2010.

I had an amazing New Year's celebration with my favorite person among my favorite people, a celebration that extended all the way into January 2nd at the magical frozen lake.

SEA OF SHOES - JANE ALDRIDGE

Jane Aldridge of 'Sea of Shoes': Celebrity blogger, amazing stylist, fashion world’s muse, and just a beautiful butterfly from the South.

This adorable girl is one of the few people who inspired me to start my own illustration blog in the first place.

The more I learned about her, the more I fell in love with everything she represented.

With a mane of fiery copper hair, transparent skin, rosy cheeks, she is often photographed bathing in warm sun rays like a sudden blast of a fresh spring air, bursting into a musty winter room. When I see her smiling face, I can’t help but hear “The Rain, The Park and Other Things” by The Cowsills playing in my head.

On the illustration above, her guardian totem – the Octopus - is assisting her with trying on different shoes from top designers. Jane is lucky to be a gorgeous young girl who can rock any one of them, so I surrounded her with some of my most favorite creations of all time.

MADONNA as SNOW QUEEN

Dear Friends,

This story that I conceived, styled and illustrated with Madonna as the Snow Queen, was inspired by her celebrity status, her strength, and the whole concept of Public Loneliness that only someone of her caliber can experience. For styling I used clothing from some of my favorite designers' collections. Enjoy

Far away on the edge of beyond, behind oceans, icebergs and storms lives the ruthless Snow Queen.

When Aurora Borealis illuminates the Northern Sky, she leaves her palace and descends into the ocean. There, riding her vicious leopard seal, armed with the sharp tusk of a giant narwhal, she is hunting in the freezing waters for vulnerable human flesh.

Poor is the unsuspecting fisherman who is carried off by the treacherous winds far into the ocean. She picks up his scent from miles away, drags him into her palace where she torments him for days. In a grotesque climax, she rips his heart out of his chest, as the insane diabolical laughter fills the icy, blood-stained cavern.
Then fisherman’s lifeless body, encased in a block of ice, takes its place inside her frozen gallery...

Nothing disrupts the icy silence of her realm, except for the dry sound of glaciers clashing and crackling against one another, innocent penguins’ screeching as they are mauled by killer whales, and the occasional piercing screams of her dying prey.

Time there runs significantly slower than on the Earth’s surface. Silent, frozen desert lies fast asleep — day is not present, only one never-ending polar night.
The Queen has all the time in the world. Nowhere to go. No one to compete with.

Eternally awake. Eternally on top.

Eternally alone.

DOE DEERE - RUSSIAN ROYALTY

These are the images from the photo shoot I did with the inimitable Doe Deere, called "The Russian Royalty", styling her as the Romanov tsarina in exile.

The bloodcurdling story of a merciless execution of the Romanov Imperial family back in 1918 continues to shock us even today in our ever cruel 2010.
Persistent rumors of a magical survival of Anastasia - the youngest daughter of the doomed Tsar Nicholas II - have been circulating in the media for years, having been finally disproved in 2008. But planning this photo shoot we were inspired by the idea of her escaping the fate of the rest of her family after all.

The styling and the dress are entirely done by me. The breathtaking photography is by Bianca Alexis and the most incredible hair is by Kristin Jackson

Fun fact about the photo above: The 'Rasputin' hand you see on tsarina's marble shoulder is actually mine!)

This, by far, is the most exciting, detailed, and memorable photo shoot I was ever a part of.

You know what, Guys?

Starting with portraits of Doe Deere and Justin Montoya, I realized that I really like the idea of drawing my friends' faces instead of some random models on my fashion illustrations. Not only it's more personal that way, but it also adds sentimental value to the picture.

So this funky girl below is Oli Magnoli - a dear friend of mine. Aside from that, she is a movie director, an amazing model, and a true Visionary in her own right.

Below is my latest work of an Alecia Zameska silk shantung & organza gown, as illustrated on Lady Gaga at the designer’s request. The illustration was sent to Gaga’s stylist.

This powerful gown, called "Date Rape," is a culminating piece of a provocative Zameska Spring 2011 Collection.

I started brainstorming for a strong concept which accurately depicted the garment’s formidable title.

At first I assumed - creatively speaking - that the wearer is the victim. So naturally I envisioned including a male figure, or an animal perhaps – but I recalled that when performing, Gaga plays her grand piano ferociously, as if she was having violent sex with it, and that image led me to a fascinating idea…

In true Gaga-fashion, I imagined a grand piano had taken the form of a monster - which Gaga had dominated, defeated, and violated.

The idea of switching the roles around and making Gaga the aggressor seemed much more captivating – ever-strong, brandishing her sword – a destructive and beautiful phallic symbol.

I was asked to illustrate her breathtaking Spring/Summer 2011 collection titled “FALLEN” that she created based on studies of Heaven and Hell inspired by the concept of Angels banished from Paradise.

With pearlized laser cut-out leather, engineered tattoo prints, intricate seaming and hand painted silks – this unique collection is a representation of Angelic beauty fallen from grace.

Expelled from God’s presence, these unapologetic women are confidently flying towards new exciting sins and ventures.

Being intolerant of any form of cliché, I live for the Unique, the Unexpected and the Out of the Ordinary. Walking home on a cold and snowy day I glanced at the windows of a getting-ready-to-be-closed-for-the-night gallery. Unable to tell exactly what it was from the distance, I crossed the street to take a closer look and

A life span of a butterfly is unforgivably short. Whether it’s the complexity of metamorphosis from an awkward caterpillar to a gorgeous winged creature that cuts its life so short - or something else, is a mystery. They embellish our lives with splashes of color, bringing inspiration and breath of Spring into our routines.

Brittany Murphy – another stunning butterfly - untimely folded her wings on December 20, 2009 leaving a trail of incredible work behind: Naïveté Tai in “Clueless”, deeply disturbed Daisy Randone in “Girl, Interrupted”, Elizabeth Burrows - young woman suffering post traumatic stress in “Don’t Say a Word”, hilariously feisty Sarah from “Just Married”, adorable Molly Gunn in “Uptown Girls”, Shellie – hotness from “Sin City” - these are merely a fraction of an extensive list of unique characters she managed to portray during her short life.

News of her passing away has staggered me. My heart goes out to her family, her mother especially. I am terribly going to miss her smile, the mischievous sparkles in her doe-eyes, and her inimitable voice.

I went through countless spring collections trying to dress her in something appropriate and beautiful till I found this Marchesa creation.

This is my tribute to this magnificent fragile thing that I used to enjoy so much watching on screen.

Fell in love with this Christian Dior dress from 2009-2010 Autumn/Winter couture collection and had to put it on my favorite girl to get it out of my system. Here she is wearing it completed with hat, also by Dior, and Givenchy necklace, bracelets & rings.

Another set of illustrations of my original designs I created back in 2003 was inspired by the fear of a world coming to an end based on Mayan Prophecies.

I’ve envisioned this mental asylum located on an isolated island, a sanctuary containing all these women who went insane being unable to take the pressure of expecting the Worst. There, they are spending their days wandering through the facility, trying to collect some peace of mind… or whatever is left of it.

Surrounded by nightmares, hounded by oddments of their memories, horrified by chilling whispers and bloodcurdling screams these poor creatures are full of futile attempts to give birth to a Savior…

Considering latest events it seems that these resurfaced at a perfect time: Madonna goes back to her Dark Era and also finally brings her Sticky & Sweet Tour to Russia – first time ever in her nearly 30-year career.

I made these two portraits of a Russian super mega star - Ludmila Gurchenko - as a tribute to this unique woman.

Later these portraits ended up on her official site, while I - endlessly inspired - made her a dress...

...which she wore for Russian edition of HELLO magazine and even signed it for me.

Later she wore it to one of Russian Music Awards events...

...and even later turned out she had green feathers and sequins added to the dress and has been appearing on stage in the play wearing it every night since 2007...

While I, even more inspired, made her another dress...

...which she wore on a tribute concert for Russia's favorite movie director Eldar Ryazanov, who shot her in his first movie more than 50 years ago, which basically put her on the map of Russian cinema. The video of her performing in my dress is here

Few days ago walking down 5th avenue I ran into the incredible Karen Santry. Seeing her instantly brought up memories of the miraculous time I had working as a model for the illustration classes that Karen has been teaching at FIT. And it also reminded me of “The Big Book of Fashion Illustration” by Martin Dawber where both of our artwork was published. In addition to being an ultimate Muse, Karen is also an amazing artist herself.
